Especially for Villa Zebra in Rotterdam Atelier Van Lieshout composed an exhibition under the title The Cannibal. Art work and graphics inspire children and adults to think about topics as consumption, production and recycling. Everything in the exhibition is about choices we make.
We can eat and fly less or reuse existing things. According to artist Joep van Lieshout we can become a cannibal. And recycle ourselves. Make sokes out of our hairs and make a hamburger of human flesh. That sounds a bit scary, but his art stimulates us to come up with new ideas.
Villa Zebra creates visual art exhibitions for children between 3 and 12 years old and seeks to stimulate creativity and curiosity in children. On a yearly basis Villa Zebra receives 25,000 to 30,000 visitors of which 60% are children. Half of the children come and visit the art exhibition with school or other groups. The other half of the children come with family or in birthday parties.
The interaction between children and art is a main focus point for Villa Zebra. Exhibition subjects are derived from the world of children. Ordinary subjects are experienced as special and extra-ordinary by way of the art. Innovative educational tools and active workshops stimulate children to invent new things and approaches to the subject.
